CONTRA Band

There is no doubt in my mind that some music critic used the above headline in a review of Vampire Weekend's new album, but I came up with it on my own, damn it.

Okay. Having said that let's get to my opinion of Vampire Weekend's sophomore disc Contra.

A year ago the buzz surrounding this four man band was deafening. Their self titled debut was released to massive critical and commercial accolades, leading to a soldout tour and TV appearances. They also played high profile festivals as Coachella and Lollapalooza.

Vampire Weekend's brand of Afro beats, reggae, and ska is undoubtedly some of the most sunny, enjoyable ear candy in years. Songs off their debut such as "A Punk" and "Walcott" will have you bounding about like a pogostick. V W 's music is joyous, uplifting and flat out fun.

Not to mention smart. These Oxford grads pen lyrics that echo their Ivy League educations. This is intelligent music for hipsters, mall rats and soccer moms alike.

After a year fraught with success, Vampire Weekend returns with the ominous task of following up their splendid debut. Have they achieved greatness once more? Has lightening struck twice in this instance?

My answer is a bonafide "yes." Contra is every bit an estatic listen as its predecessar; perhaps even more so. The beats are as contagious, those lyrics as witty and as clever, and the overall mood boisterous and joyful.

The radio hits "Horchata" and "Cousins" only hint at the album's attitude. "California English", "Giving Up The Gun," and the synth heavy "Diplomat's Son" all boast heavy hooks you'd expect from these fellows.

Overall Contra delivers the goods. Fans of the first album should embrace this one as passionately. For the cold, dreary, depressing winter months this album serves as a hopeful diversion that spring and summer is on its way. Contra 's sunny disposition is infectious.
